The purpose of this project was to assist the SBCCOG with a series of workshops to refine, present and build local government support for a "Sustainable South Bay Strategy."

Goals

  • Accommodate Projected Growth
  • Provide Robust Mobility Alternatives
  • Relieve Traffic Congestion
  • Provide Vibrant Retail Centers
  • Reduce Stress on Aging Infrastructure
  • Strengthen City Revenues

The 17 local jurisdictions that form the South Bay Cities Council of Governments represent first generation suburbs, and were predominantly built-out during the post-war expansion of the Los Angeles Urban core.  Initially developed as streetcar suburbs, and later adapted to vehicular traffic these areas are faced with the challenge of growing sustainably without the benefit of major planned transit infrastructure.  Based on a comprehensive small-area walking-trip travel surveys conducted by researchers from UC Irvine, this project developed a strategy for densification of retail options along traditionally auto-oriented corridors.  In addition the project examined multi modal transportation strategies including walking, biking, local neighborhood vehicles, and electric vehicle infrastructure.  In the end the project identified a Smart Suburb Strategy for the South Bay region.
