This project evaluated the potential for a public park that would be built on a deck constructed over the below-grade portion of the Hollywood Freeway (US-101) from Bronson Avenue to Wilton Place.

Goals

  • Reunite communities that were separated by the construction of the freeway
  • Create new recreational space and improve livability in the area
  • Save the city money by avoiding purchase of existing land
  • Create new economic and community activity

The park concept was originally proposed by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Then, Compass Blueprint provided analysis of the redevelopment potential in the diverse neighborhoods surrounding the proposed area of the park. Working with stakeholders to document local knowledge and vision, Compass Blueprint synthesized this information into conceptual plans for the neighborhood that will both respond to community concerns and be market-feasible. The project is also undergoing a preliminary engineering feasibility study concurrent with the Compass Blueprint Demonstration Project.

Results

  • Consider mixed use development facing the park, at nodes where the freeway cap intersects major streets
  • Create walkways on both edges of the park to create a motorless corridor for pedestrian and bike traffic
  • Re-orient residential development along edges of the cap to keep "eyes on the park" for safety
  • Develop low income housing along park to match local income and employment demographics
  • Use a mix of transit and new parking to manage new traffic in the neighborhood

Of Note

The residents of Council District 13 had come up with the Hollywood Central Park freeway cap project concept 13 years ago and now their vision can become a reality.
