Toolbox Tuesdays Summer 2013:

Tuesday, June 25 (10:00 am – 2:30 pm)

Bicycle Activity Database and Counting Procedures/Methodology

A problem in current planning practice is the lack of accessible data to quantify benefits or justify projects. Active Transportation Data is often collected for specific projects such as EIRs, Traffic Signal warrants, or as part of a bicycle or Active Transportation planning process. Unfortunately, much of the data often sits on a shelf, unknown to planners who can use this data.

SCAG and Los Angeles County Metro have partnered to develop a Bicycle Database and Clearinghouse. The Database/Clearinghouse is an attempt to collect all available bicycle count data and place it into a central database that can be used by planners. A standard documentation procedure is being developed to ensure a common dataset is used throughout the region regardless of methodology.

This Toolbox session will feature a description of innovative counting methodologies developed through successful past projects, an overview of the database/clearinghouse and a description/tutorial of how to use the database in your planning process.
